The best foundation is of little use if it is applied badly: too much product, visible edges along the jaw, a finish that turns patchy after an hour. After years backstage – from Paris Fashion Week to magazine shoots – we know that technique decides more about the result than the price of the product. Here are the three methods compared.
Preparation: less foundation through a better base
On well-cared-for, slightly moist skin you need much less foundation. A thin layer of Ma Base Secrète Pro Primer evens out pores and gives foundation something to hold on to. Let it absorb for two minutes, then start.
Method 1: the brush – the professional choice
A dense, flat foundation brush such as our No. 4 foundation brush spreads foundation sheer and evenly. Here is how:
- Put a pea-sized drop of INCEPTION liquid foundation on the back of your hand – not directly on the face.
- Pick it up with the brush and stroke from the centre of the face outwards: nose, cheeks, forehead, chin.
- Let it fade out towards the jaw and hairline rather than stopping abruptly – that way there are no edges.
- Where you need more coverage, dab on a second sheer layer instead of stroking.
Result: precise, streak-free, medium to full coverage. Ideal for photos and long days. Wash the brush weekly.
Method 2: the fingers – quick and natural
The warmth of your fingers makes foundation supple and lets it melt into the skin. Put foundation on your fingertips, dot it onto cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and blend by gently tapping – do not rub. Wash your hands first, otherwise bacteria travel to the face.
Result: very natural, light coverage, perfect for the "skin first" look. Less suitable if you want to cover a lot.
Method 3: the sponge – soft but wasteful
A damp sponge gives a soft, airy finish. The downside: it soaks up as much as half the product, has to be washed after every use and is hygienically finished after a few weeks. For a sustainable make-up kit the sponge is therefore our last choice. If you still like it: apply foundation with the brush and only dab at the end with the damp sponge.
Setting – but only where necessary
A touch of INCEPTION loose powder on the T-zone and under the eyes with the No. 1 powder brush is enough. The cheeks stay unpowdered – so the skin keeps its natural glow. For on the go, the No. 13 Kabuki is practical, as it spreads powder and foundation alike.
The most common mistakes
- Too much product at once – always start thin and build up.
- Foundation only down to the jawline – include the neck and ears lightly.
- Wrong shade – test at the jawline in daylight, not on the back of the hand.
- Powder everywhere – it flattens the skin and emphasises fine lines.
