Powder is the most underrated product in the make-up bag. It decides whether foundation survives the day, whether the skin looks natural or mask-like – and whether you can touch up on the go. Compact or loose? The honest answer: it depends on your skin and your daily routine.
What sets the two apart
Loose powder is finely milled, very light and practically colourless on the skin. It sets foundation, removes shine and leaves a soft, velvety finish – without adding coverage. Our INCEPTION loose powder comes in five depths (N100 to N500) so that it leaves no pale cast even on dark skin.
Compact powder is pressed and pigmented. It can replace or complement foundation, evens out redness and can be reapplied on the go. The INCEPTION compact powder comes in the same fifteen shades as the foundation – N, W and C from 010 to 050 – so the two match exactly.
Which powder for which skin?
- Oily skin or large pores: loose powder on the T-zone, compact powder in your bag for re-mattifying. Both sparingly – too much powder emphasises pores.
- Dry or mature skin: loose powder only, and only where shine bothers you. Compact powder can settle into fine lines.
- Normal skin, little time: compact powder alone over a thin layer of skincare – the fastest route to an even complexion.
- Dark skin tones: be sure to choose loose powder in the matching depth (N400/N500); a powder that is too light looks ashy. Compact powder in your foundation shade.
- Sensitive skin: the loose powder is formulated without fragrance; the compact powder contains fragrance and is less suitable for very reactive skin.
The right application
Pick up loose powder with the No. 1 large powder brush , tap off the excess on the lid and lay it on the T-zone and chin in light circles. Apply compact powder with the No. 14 powder & blush brush in gentle strokes from the inside out – never rub with the little sponge, that leaves patches.
Refill: bamboo once, then only refill
Both powders are available as refills: the compact powder refill goes into the existing bamboo case, the loose powder refill into the bamboo sifter. Refills are cheaper than the first purchase and save the entire packaging. More on this in our article about sustainable make-up.

Loose powder sets, compact powder covers. If you only want one: the loose one for oily skin, the compact one when time is short. If you have both, use loose powder in the morning and compact powder on the go – and refill both instead of buying new.
